October 30, 2019 — RAEL Lunch, Gordon Bauer, “Leveraging big data and charging coordination for effective taxi fleet electrification: A case study of Shenzhen, China”

October 30, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

On-demand mobility fleets have become an important part of urban transportation, and the sector is expected to grow rapidly in coming years, leading to increases in greenhouse gas emissions, congestion, and air pollution. Despite analysis showing fleets should be a prime market for early electrification, adoption of electric vehicles in fleets lags adoption in the personal vehicle market by a large margin, and few plans exist to close this gap. My previous work with data from San Francisco, New York City, and Shenzhen, China suggests that proper fleet management and coordination of charging operations are key levers to facilitate electrification at low or negative cost. In this presentation I will review these findings and discuss policy alternatives to accelerating fleet electrification, from data-sharing platforms and clear regulation of driver-operator relationships, to electrification mandates and emissions-based congestion charges.
