RAEL Students

Students in RAEL a diverse group, with interests and backgrounds from all over the world, and all over the academic, civil society, government service, and commercial universe.  Please look through the RAEL projects, publication lists, and student pages to learn more about this remarkable group.

Peter Alstone

Peter’s research focus areas are information technology approaches to energy development, understanding markets for demand-side energy technology, and energy technology policy. Outside of academics, he contributes to the Lighting Global program, which supports the market for modern off-grid lighting in the developing world. Peter’s work for Lighting Global includes technical and engineering support, policy development, […]

Anne-Perrine Avrin

Anne-Perrine is a first-year MS/PhD student. She worked on nuclear safety in France and nuclear reactor construction in China. She is currently working in the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory of Daniel Kammen, on long-term investment planning for the Chinese energy mix. Her interest relates to nuclear energy for developing and emerging countries from engineering, economic […]

Juan Pablo Carvallo Bodelon

Since graduating as an electronics engineer in 2004, JP Carvallo has been working, studying, and researching different aspects of the energy field. His current interests relate to varied topics in sustainable development for less industrialized economies, with a geographical focus in Latin America and Asia. He brings together different disciplines – engineering, economics, political science, and sociology […]

Dimitry Gershenson

I am a third year PhD student at UC Berkeley, in the Energy and Resources Group. I came to graduate school after nearly two and a half years of development work in Latin America, as well as short stints in research and advocacy. My current interests include energy access business models, private financing of energy access in emerging […]

Patricia Hildalgo-Gonzalez

Patricia graduated as an industrial and electrical engineer in 2012 from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). During her undergraduate studies she worked as a Linear Algebra teaching assistant for three years, performed research in Dr. Daniel Kammen’s Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL) at UC Berkeley working on the SWITCH model for the US. She […]

Josiah Johnston

I grew up in a rural part of the Ozark Mountains. I’m great at construction and swinging a pick. Between college and grad school I lived in Baltimore for five years. When I left for grad school, I was a tenured researcher in a genetics lab and had a seat on the board of a community development corporation. I came to ERG in attempts to […]

Noah Kittner

Noah is an MS/PhD student at ERG. After graduating with a BS in Environmental Science from UNC-Chapel Hill, Noah was a Fulbright Fellow at the Joint Graduate School for Energy and the Environment in Thailand researching technical and policy aspects of solar electricity and sustainability assessment. He has installed solar panels in Mexico and conducted research with […]

Diego Ponce de Leon

I am working on my  MS/PhD at the Energy and Resources Group (ERG). My research is in low-carbon (low-impact) energy systems and economic development, modeling high renewable energy future scenarios, and deploying sMArt Grid (high-tech/low-cost) pilots in the rising south.  I’ve worked in Chiapas (Mexico) developing regional microcredit schemes and river survey studies,  designed and built […]

Daniel Sanchez

Daniel L. Sanchez is a Ph.D. student and a researcher in the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory. He is interested in quantitative analysis to inform public policy, focusing on bioenergy and climate policy. Daniel has previously held positions with the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), Green for All, and the California Public Utilities Commission. He holds an […]

Rebekah Shirley

Rebekah Shirley is currently a PhD student with the Energy and Resources Group (ERG) at the University of California, Berkeley where she also obtained a MSc. Energy and Resources and a MSc. Civil Engineering. She has a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Environment at McGill University. She is from Trinidad and Tobago and worked there doing environmental impact […]
